Where the data comes from
All organisation data on this site is derived from public IRS records:
- Exempt Organisations Business Master File (EO BMF) — the IRS's registry of every recognised tax-exempt org (~1.9 M as of latest pull).
- IRS Publication 78 — the list of orgs eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.
- Form 990 / 990-EZ / 990-PF / 990-N XML corpus — annual filings (~4.86 M filings).
- IRS Auto-Revocation list — orgs whose tax-exempt status was revoked for failing to file three years in a row.
- OFAC Sanctions lists — for cross-checking sanctioned entities.
What we do with it
We re-publish that public data with light normalisation — capitalisation cleanup, name de-duplication, derived ratios (program-expense ratio, fundraising efficiency), peer benchmarks, and similarity scores against other orgs in the same NTEE category and revenue band.
Freshness
EO BMF and Pub 78 are refreshed monthly. The Form 990 corpus is refreshed quarterly (the IRS itself only releases new XML batches periodically). Search indexes refresh nightly.
Accuracy
We don't independently audit, verify, or vouch for the accuracy of any organisation's IRS filings. Numbers shown here reflect what each organisation reported to the IRS, and those reports are themselves self-reported. If you spot an error, the source of truth is the IRS's own database — we're a re-publisher of public records, not the original record-keeper.
Form 990-PF caveat
Private foundations file Form 990-PF, which has a different schema than Form 990. Their mission text and program detail aren't in the same fields, so for 990-PF orgs you may see a friendly “Form 990-PF” hint instead of a mission paragraph. The financials (revenue, expenses, grants paid, net assets) are populated normally.
