The foundation's primary tax exempt mission is to promote the study and understanding of Islamic arts and cultures. The foundation accomplishes this in two primary ways:1. Through shangri la museum Doris Duke's former residence in honolulu, hawaii - which is owned and supported by DDFIA and undertakes a range of activities as a center for learning about Islamic arts, culture and design; and2. Through the building bridges program, which is based in New York and awards grants to support national efforts, working with u.s. Muslims, to increase mutual understanding and well-being among diverse populations for the benefit of building stronger, inclusive communities. Shangri la houses Doris Duke's collection of Islamic Art, and provides a unique environment for the study of Islamic arts, culture and design. Numbering approximately 4,500 objects and cultural resources, the collection includes works of art from spain, morocco, egypt, syria, iran, central Asia, india, and parts of Southeast Asia. Most of the collection can be classified as Islamic Art and artifacts although other cultural traditions are also represented. The collection exemplifies the assemblage of diverse cultures often included in the monolithic term "Islamic Art."shangri la's resources also include the historic site and buildings, cultural landscape, household furnishings, archives, and personal affects, many of which are incorporated programmatically. The breadth and diversity of the resources at shangri la lend themselves to multidisciplinary programming, embracing the visual and performing arts. Shangri la accomplishes their mission by receiving and receiving and reaching audiences through education programs such as public tours, residencies, lectures, performances, panel discussions, digital programming, travel exhibitions, among other activities with a focus on Islamic arts, culture and design. In 2024, DDFIA's shangri la approved no new grants.the Doris Duke foundation for Islamic Art incurred $7,154,289 in programmatic expenditures related to the shangri la museum in 2024.the building bridges program supports planning and implementation of projects that engage u.s.-based Muslim and non-muslim populations in arts and media-based experiences designed to advance relationships and understanding for mutual well-being. Through this approach, the program's larger aim is to contribute toward a more just civil society and greater well-being among people. The building bridges program seeks to support initiatives that use arts and media to highlight the diversity of Muslim populations around the world for American audiences in order to dispel negative stereotypes and increase understanding. In 2024, DDFIA's building bridges program approved 11 new grants.
