The fund for the envoronment was established in january, 1987 to support environmental causes and issues, including land conservation, clean air and water, and environmental education. The fund operated through grants from philanthropic partners and gifts from individuals, with the proceeds used by the fund to support environmental organizations in Michigan. In 1988, the fund, working with national nonprofit earthshare, added the role of environmental workplace giving, with access in the state of Michigan's workplace giving program, along with access in various federal agencies' workplace giving, and workplace giving with a handful of corporate partners. The fund did this first under the dba environmental fund for Michigan; and then, in 1999, under a partnership with nonprofit environmental funds in 15 other States and national earthshare, operated undet the dba earthshare of Michigan.
