Rotuma Island Amateur Radio Propagation Study - November-December 2024 In late 2024 a team of six amateur radio operators traveled to Rotuma Island to conduct a series of radio atmospheric propagation tests across frequencies ranging from 1.8 to 51 MHz. The project utilized two locally based transmitters on the Island as well as three remotely operated transmitters controlled via the internet by licensed radio amateurs around the world. The goal of the expedition was to study real-time propagation conditions in a remote equatorial location contributing valuable data to the amateur radio and scientific communities. In addition to the technical experiments the team engaged with local students and scientists sharing knowledge and demonstrating the relevance and excitement of amateur radio. Several sessions and experiments were streamed online and featured in various amateur radio podcasts allowing a wider audience to benefit from the insights gained during the expedition.
