At Sturgeon City, our mission is to champion environmental and steam (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education, shaping the future by nurturing leaders and stewards of both the environment and the sciences. For more than 40 years, the city of Jacksonville discharged its wastewater into the new river. In 1997, the city moved to an environmentally friendly land application treatment system and stopped discharging into the river. The city took responsibility for the impacts to the river and began bioremediation projects to restore river and wetland health and determined that the former plant could be converted into an education center. The project expansion to include civic and environmental education led to the formation of the Sturgeon City non-profit. The non-profit provides steam and environmental education for K-12 students and the community. Education is provided through hands-on inquiry based programs and events.
