The primary Exempt purpose of Books Are Gemsinc formerly known as Gems has been to increase literacy rates in the region by offering Free Books to children and teachers as well as home school parents since 2003 The mission is to inspire change and empower families through literacy for the community Books Are Gems partners with other organizaions to reach children in mass proportions at different events They work with civic groups such as Kiwanis Lions clubs rotary clubs etc We also partner with other nonprofits such as 2nd chance for kids special olympics the childrens development center the grief center and many of the surrounding schools in the area
