Houston Grand Opera (HGO) is committed to the future of Opera through initiatives that engage new audiences and give new artists a stage for their voices to be heard. Through this commitment, we have had the honor of commissioning a plethora of world premieres - both mainstage Grand operas and smaller-scale works - as well as hosting the American premieres of several major operas, paving the way for new eras of the art form in all genres, time periods, and languages. Part of Houston Grand Opera's mission to use the arts as a tool for education and social advancement includes our dramaturgy initiatives. Dramaturgy is the development of a performance through conversation, representation, and understanding the greater context of the on-stage elements of an Opera. Through lectures, hands-on involvement, and other initiatives, our dramaturg leads our practice as we strive for constant growth at every stage of development. Our commitment to Houston takes us beyond the stage with community and learning programs that nurture a love for the arts for new generations, spark conversations, and make Opera accessible to all. The Butler Studio's goal is to develop well-rounded professionals by providing the highest quality training combined with a wide range of performance opportunities. One of the most respected emerging artist programs in the world, the Butler Studio is distinguished from many other programs in the level of integration between Studio members and mainstage artists and production teams.
