The Stanford theatre foundation was established to promote the preservation, study and public appreciation of classic American films produced primarily between 1920 and 1960. The Stanford theatre foundation operates the Stanford theatre, located in palo alto, California. The Stanford theatre is the largest remaining "movie palace" on the Southern peninsula of San Francisco bay. Originally constructed in 1925, the theatre seats 1,170. The Stanford theatre foundation made extensive renovations and restorations in 1988 and 1989, brought the theatre up to current construction and seismic codes, and much of its original decor was restored. The theatre reopened to the public in 1989 and has operated in a festival format since that time to foster the public's understanding and appreciation of the golden age of American cinema on a basis consistent with the foundation's charitable and educational purposes.
