Mission Statement: The Washington West African Center (WAWAC) serves as a vital resource hub for West Africans in Washington, bridging cultural and social gaps within the wider community. Our mission is to empower individuals through education, advocacy, cultural appreciation, and tailored support services while fostering a sense of belonging and enabling community members to realize their full potential. Summary of Activities: WAWAC has implemented impactful programs and services to support the West African community: - Drop-In Center: Provides free services, including housing assistance, bill payment, resume building, job application support, and language interpretation. - Food Distribution: Partnered with Edmonds Food Bank to distribute over 126,000 pounds of food to more than 4,200 people in 2024. - Tax Assistance: Offers help with tax filing, assisting 15 individuals last year and aiming to support 50 by April 2025. - Health & COVID-19 Support: Facilitates health insurance applications and shares culturally relevant COVID-19 prevention information to improve vaccination rates. - Kids & Youth Programs: Enriches childrens lives through free after-school and summer camp programs focused on academic support, art, and community-building activities. - Community Events & Outreach: Hosted and participated in 38 events, including cultural festivals and immigrant advocacy initiatives, engaging over 5,000 attendees. - Advocacy & Education: Developed over 60 audiovisual materials in 15 local languages to share vital information, reaching over 8,000 community members. - Volunteer Program: Leveraged the support of 90 volunteers from the University of Washington and the general community to enhance services and bridge gaps. - Transportation Assistance: Distributed ORCA cards and provided transportation for legal and immigration appointments, helping over 15 people with plans to expand. - Building Community Power: Advocated for policies addressing systemic barriers and fostered collaborations with local organizations to amplify community impact.
