Historical Society of the New York Courts

The society's most significant activities in the calendar year 2025 were performed largely in a hybrid fashion, incorporating both pre- and post-covid-19 practices of in-person and remote activities. Staff worked together both in person at the office and through remote access, and programs were held using both methods, while continuing to assess what models work best for society membership and program attendees. Administrative responsibilities, including staff, board, and committee meetings, were held substantially in a hybrid fashion. The society held its annual gala in 2025. The event is the society's most significant fundraiser of the year. The society received gross receipts of $461,700. Grants in 2025: as with 2024, the society did not receive substantial grant funding in 2025, but did continue to disburse grant funding from prior years, as described below. Donations & transfers: significant donations included: - the society received a donation of 50 shares of mckesson stock, which were sold for $44,583. - after the dissolution of the Historical records of the New York county clerk, inc., the remaining funds were transferred to the society. The bulk of this transfer occurred in prior years, and the remaining funds of $13,108 were transferred in 2025. Disbursement of grant and donation proceeds: the following expenditures of grant proceeds were made in 2025. The society worked to implement the provisions of the various grants and to report to grantors: - william nelson cromwell foundation grant: $975 for purchasing copies the eight to gift to members as well as student interns at the nassau county supreme court. This grant has also been used for publication expenses as well as outreach for the book and the development of book talks. - first department representation of justice fund: these funds were raised in 2023 for the appellate division, first department to contextualize its existing artwork in the courthouse and add additional pieces that better represent the diversity of judges, attorneys, and court users, whether by gender, race, or other demographic, to highlight the inclusivity of justice today, as well as develop appropriate programming. In 2025 the society disbursed $518 for this program: $175 for cash prizes for a student art competition and $343 for an event reception. - commercial division film fund: the remaining $20,000 of $60,000 raised in 2024 to support the creation of a new commercial division film was spent. The revised film features new interviews with judges and attorneys as well as updates in the industry.
