In 2025, r/v Pilar inc.created the first-ever public data tracking system for balloons found in nature, allowing easy reporting through our website and addressing the growing environmental hazard balloons pose to marine life. We've received over 130 submissions to date. Working alongside surfrider foundation & cca California, we've met with city councils across San Diego county to advocate for a ban on helium-filled balloons, with no resistance from the community. We continue educating the public through social media by promoting alternatives to balloons, while also advancing ocean science through our noaa striped marlin tagging program, deploying 72 tags to track migration and spawning locations.
